NEW ZEALAND POLICE found Grace Millan's body today. Digging under a cloudy sky, with a seasonably warm temperature, they discovered a suitcase that looked exactly like a case purchased by Jack last week. It was buried in a shallow grave in a woodland area, Waitakere Ranges, just outside Auckland.

DI Scott Beard said a formal identification process would have to be conducted. Still, everyone seemed sure of what they'd unearthed under mud and leaves.

Inside the suitcase — Grace's bloody, bruised, and naked body was found. The young woman with such a wonderful life ahead of her was curled into a fetal position.

Dr. Simon Stables, a forensic pathologist, examined Grace's body while it was still inside the suitcase. He found more than a dozen bruises on the corpse and estimated that at least nine of them occurred around the time of death. Those bruises were on Grace's upper arms, left clavicle, and collarbone, as well as on the front and back of her left shoulder.

Stables said the bruises on Grace's upper arms and left shoulder — each between one and five centimeters in diameter —showed that she had been restrained — tied down.

The injuries were too significant to be what might be called "love bites," said Stables. However, he admitted they might have been caused by "physical sex."

But, here's the kicker.

Stables also found bruises on the left side of Grace's neck that showed the backpacker was strangled to death. He said she must have died from someone squeezing her neck — choking her— "for long enough and with enough force for the bruising to occur."

Could it be possible that Grace had been with someone — Jack, for instance — who was playing a sex game of erotic asphyxiation that just went too far?

No way.

Dr. Stables said the bruises on Grace's neck were not caused by gentle pressure. According to the pathologist, it takes a lot of force to produce that kind of an injury. On top of that, whoever caused those bruises was squeezing her neck for at least four to five minutes.

And, there were no defensive wounds or injuries on Grace's body. That meant either she'd been restrained so forcefully that she couldn't fight back, or had quickly lost consciousness.

So this was no accident. Indeed, the strangulation was so violent that blood vessels had burst in Grace's face and left eye, and, just as Jack had told DS Settle, blood had flowed from her nose.

Dr. Stables had never seen a case like this — a person, man or woman — throttled so viciously, that they would be bruised this severely around the neck.

Indeed, he would later testify, "From my point of view it is incredibly rare. I have never heard of another case...in New Zealand."

DI Beard affirmed that his team believed they had recovered Grace's body. Now they were looking for the 2016 red Toyota Corolla that Jack rented the day he purchased a shovel, a pair of gloves, and cleaning supplies.

But as for the search for Grace, it was over.
